Our Chicago City Escape: Good Food, Great Company, and Stories Worth Bringing Home

September 30, 2026•4 min read

Some trips are about checking off every attraction on a list. Our Chicago City Escape was about something else: spending time together, exploring at a comfortable pace, and letting the city surprise us along the way.

Over a few days, we walked through Chicago, learned about its history, enjoyed some memorable meals, and made space for an experience that meant a lot to me personally. It was the kind of trip that reminded me why I love bringing people together to travel.

Getting to Know Chicago, One Walk at a Time

We spent part of our first day simply walking around the city. That’s often when a destination starts to feel real to me. You can look at photos before a trip, but being there gives you a much better sense of its energy.

For lunch, we stopped at Portillo’s. After that, I visited theWit for a site inspection. Site inspections are one of the ways I keep future KMD Travel experiences in mind while I’m on the road. I want to see a place for myself and think through how it might fit the travelers who trust me with their vacations.

Later, we took an architecture tour. Chicago is a wonderful city to explore this way because the tour gives you a chance to pause, look up, and pay attention to the buildings around you. We finished the day with dinner at Yardbird, which gave us time to sit down together after a full day out.

A Visit That Meant Something to Me

Obama Presidential Center

One of the experiences I was most looking forward to was visiting the Obama Presidential Center. We had the opportunity to go inside the museum and learn more about President Obama.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: I believe he is the best president this country has ever had. Being able to spend time in a place dedicated to his story meant a great deal to me. It gave us a chance to slow down, learn, and reflect.

That visit was also a reminder of what travel can offer beyond a change of scenery. Sometimes you go somewhere because it’s beautiful or fun. Sometimes you go because a place connects with your values, your memories, or the people whose stories have mattered in your life. I’m glad we made time for this one.

Tasting Our Way Through the City

Another day brought us a Chicago food tour. We got to try different foods and learn a little of the city’s history along the way. I love that combination. A food tour gives you a reason to explore, and the stories behind the stops add so much to what you’re tasting.

We also took a stroll through Millennium Park before heading to Navy Pier. One of the best things about this trip was having room in the day for moments like those. We could enjoy where we were without feeling like we had to rush to the next thing.

And yes, we made time for deep dish pizza. We ended the day with dinner at Lou Malnati’s, then stopped at Lure for a nightcap. After a day of walking, eating, and exploring, it felt good to settle in and enjoy the company.

What I’ll Remember Most

When I think back on Chicago, I’ll remember the places we visited, but I’ll also remember the rhythm of the trip. We had plans, and we had time to breathe. We learned about the city, enjoyed its food, and shared experiences we’ll be able to talk about long after we’ve unpacked.

That balance matters to me when I plan a KMD Travel City Escape. I want our travelers to have something to look forward to each day, while still having the freedom to enjoy a city in their own way. A great group trip should bring people together without making every moment feel scheduled.

Chicago gave us a little bit of everything: an architecture tour, a meaningful museum visit, a food tour, familiar favorites like Millennium Park and Navy Pier, and meals that were as much about being together as they were about what was on the table.

Most of all, it gave us new memories. And that’s always the part I hope people bring home.

Chicago, thank you for showing us a good time. We’ll be talking about this City Escape for a while!

Here’s to your next adventure,
