Behind the Scenes of a Travel Advisor: Hosting Our Barbados FAM Experience | KMD Travel
People often use travel agent and travel advisor like they mean the same thing.
They don’t.
A travel agent helps process bookings.
A travel advisor provides guidance, firsthand insight, destination expertise, and curated recommendations based on real experience.
And one of the ways we deepen that expertise?
Through FAM experiences (familiarization trips).
But this time was extra special.
This wasn’t a trip I simply attended.
This was a KMD FAM Experience—a destination immersion experience I hosted for a group of travel advisors in Barbados so they could experience the destination firsthand, build confidence in selling it, and truly understand what happens behind the scenes in this business.
Because becoming a destination expert requires more than scrolling supplier websites.
So let me bring you into the life of a travel advisor.
Day 1: Wheels Down… and Straight to Work

We landed in Barbados and checked into our first host property, The Crane Resort.
And wow… what a first impression.
The Crane is one of Barbados’ most iconic luxury resorts, perched dramatically on a cliff overlooking the ocean with a blend of historic charm and spacious residential-style accommodations.
It’s elegant, scenic, and absolutely gives “special occasion escape” energy.
But before anyone got too comfortable?
Work began.
We jumped straight into our first site inspection.
Because when I host FAM experiences, it’s not about simply enjoying a destination.
It’s about teaching advisors how to evaluate it.
We ask:
Who is this resort ideal for?
What traveler fits best here?
What are the room categories really like?
What questions should clients ask?
What might marketing photos not tell you?
That evening, we gathered for an incredible welcome dinner at The Crane’s steakhouse—a perfect way to kick off the week.
Day 2: Education + Hotel Marathon

Day 2 was full-on advisor mode.
We started with destination education from the Barbados tourism board along with local destination management companies.
This part matters because great advisors don’t just sell hotels.
We understand logistics.
Excursions.
Transfer timing.
Local partnerships.
Cultural experiences.
Traveler fit.
Then it was time for a serious lineup of inspections.
The Waves Hotel & Spa
An intimate, adults-focused all-inclusive property with a wellness-forward feel.
Great for travelers wanting boutique beachfront relaxation with a quieter vibe.
Lunch here was definitely appreciated.
Treasure Beach
Small, stylish, intimate luxury.
This is perfect for travelers who prefer boutique personality over giant resort energy.
Quiet luxury in Barbados form.
Colony Club

Classic elegance.
Lush grounds.
Timeless sophistication.
And yes—the Rum Vault was a standout.
If your clients appreciate refinement and a more polished Caribbean experience, this is worth noting.
O2 Beach Club & Spa
More modern.
More energetic.
More contemporary luxury.
This is for travelers who like elevated all-inclusive experiences with a little more buzz.
Sea Breeze Beach House
Family-friendly but still upscale.
Beachfront, approachable, fun, and strong value.
By the end of this day?
Let’s just say our step counters had plenty to talk about.
Day 3: Destination Immersion
Day 3 gave us a little breathing room.
We checked out of The Crane and shifted into experiencing the destination beyond the hotels.
Because that matters too.
First stop?
Harrison’s Cave.
An iconic Barbados attraction and exactly the kind of experience advisors need to understand firsthand.
Then a quick stop at Rihanna Drive, because obviously.
And one unexpectedly personal moment—stopping at Builder’s Wall and finding a brick with both my maiden and married names.
Such a cool surprise.
Then we headed to our next host property:
Hilton Barbados

After check-in?
Yes… another site inspection.
Hilton Barbados offers strong beachfront positioning, recognizable brand confidence, and great appeal for travelers who love loyalty programs while still wanting island access.
That evening, we headed to Oistins for food, culture, music, and authentic Barbados vibes.
Then wrapped up the night at Hilton’s Rum Shop for a proper Barbados nightcap.

Day 4: Leisure… Kind Of

We actually got a little breathing room in the morning.
So naturally?
Pool time.
Because balance.
Then back to business.
Hotel Indigo
Boutique, stylish, modern, and full of personality.
A great option for travelers who want design-forward accommodations with local flair.
Then we headed for our final inspections.
Sandals Barbados + Sandals Royal Barbados

These sister resorts are a dream for couples.
Shared access between both properties means:
more restaurants
more pools
more entertainment
more options
Sandals Barbados feels lively and social.
Sandals Royal Barbados feels more elevated and refined.
Perfect for honeymoons, anniversaries, and romantic escapes.
That evening, our host hotel's sales manager treated us to an incredible farewell dinner.
And because no great FAM ends quietly…
We wrapped up the night at the Rum Shop with laughter, dancing, and some very enthusiastic line dancing.
Day 5: Saying Goodbye
Our final morning in Barbados.
We hoped to catch the famous Pebbles Beach horses getting their morning bath.
Didn’t quite make it down—but had the perfect balcony view.
And before heading to the airport?
One last pool dip.
One last beach moment.
One last deep breath of Barbados air.
Why This Matters
This is what people don’t see.
Travel advisors invest in destination education, supplier relationships, firsthand site inspections, and immersive experiences so we can confidently guide our clients.
And through KMD FAM Experiences, I get to help other advisors do the same.
Because great advisors don’t just sell destinations.
They understand them.
And yes…
Sometimes that understanding comes with poolside research.
Thinking About Barbados?
Now you know who to call.
